You leave Essaouira heading east on the N8. The first stretch follows the coast briefly before turning inland through the famous argan forest – this is where you'll see goats perched in the trees, one of Morocco's most photographed oddities. The road is well-maintained, mostly flat, and rarely congested.
About 90 minutes in, you'll notice the landscape drying out as you approach the Marrakech area. Your driver takes the bypass – no need to enter the city – and heads south toward Agafay. The last stretch is where the magic happens: green Morocco fades away and the rocky, ochre desert plateau appears. It feels like arriving on another planet.
