You leave Essaouira in the early morning, the ocean fading behind you as you head east on the N8. The first two hours are flat and easy – smooth highway through the famous argan forests. You might spot goats in the trees, and your driver can stop at a cooperative if you'd like fresh argan oil for the trek.
After bypassing Marrakech (no city traffic), the landscape changes dramatically. You join the P2017 heading south toward Asni, and the mountains appear. The road begins to climb. Over the next 90 minutes, you wind upward through pine forests and terraced Berber villages, gaining altitude steadily. Each switchback reveals a bigger view – the Haouz plain shrinking behind you, snow-capped peaks growing ahead.
By the time you reach Imlil at 1,740m, you're in a completely different world. The air is cooler, the mountains tower above you, and the pace of life is a universe away from the Essaouira medina. Your driver drops you at the village center – the trailheads, lodges, and guides are all within walking distance.
