The journey starts with the trickiest part — exiting your camp through the Agafay desert tracks. Our drivers know these roads by heart, so the 30 minutes to reach the main highway are smooth and stress-free. You'll pass the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir on your left, with the Atlas Mountains reflected in the water.
Once on the N8 highway, the landscape transforms rapidly. The dry Agafay plateau gives way to olive groves, then the famous argan forests where goats climb the trees (yes, really). The road is flat, well-maintained, and mostly straight. About an hour in, you'll notice the air changing — cooler, saltier. The Atlantic is getting closer.
The last 30 minutes bring the first ocean views. You descend through the final stretch of argan country, and suddenly Essaouira appears — white ramparts against the deep blue Atlantic. The contrast with where you woke up this morning is extraordinary.
Conseil saisonnier : This route is most popular from March to November. In summer, leaving Agafay in the morning is wise — you escape the desert heat and arrive at the breezy coast by lunchtime. In spring, the argan forests are lush and green along the way.
