Best Time to Visit Morocco — Month-by-Month (2026)

Morocco has five very different climate zones — Marrakech, the Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir), the Atlas mountains (Imlil, Toubkal), the Sahara (Merzouga, Zagora), and the north (Fes, Chefchaouen). "When to visit" depends entirely on where you’re going. Here’s the honest month-by-month breakdown for 2026.

TL;DR best months

  • Marrakech + Sahara: March–May, October–November
  • Essaouira + coast: May–September (kite season: April–September)
  • Atlas / Imlil trekking: May–October
  • Avoid: July–August inland (40°C+), Dec–Feb Atlas (snow), Ramadan March 17–Apr 15 (unless that suits you)

Highlighted rows = shoulder/peak sweet spot months. Nighttime temperatures are typically 10–15°C lower than daytime in Marrakech and Sahara, 5–7°C lower on the coast.

Peak vs shoulder vs low season

Peak (March–May, October–November): the Moroccan sweet spot. Perfect temperatures, every attraction open, but riad prices up 30–50% and the medina busier. Book transfers and riads at least 4–6 weeks ahead.

Shoulder (June, September): a solid middle ground. Inland heat picks up but coast is excellent. Prices reasonable. Easter bookings in late March/early April push prices up temporarily.

Low (December–February, July–August): cheapest period overall. December–February is cool but crisp (good for the desert if you pack for cold nights). July–August is brutally hot inland, but Essaouira and Agadir are thriving — this is when Moroccan locals take their holidays on the coast.

Ramadan 2026 — March 17 to April 15

Ramadan is the Islamic holy month of fasting. Observant Muslims don’t eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. Practical impact for travelers:

  • Restaurants: Many local restaurants close during the day; tourist restaurants in Marrakech and coastal resorts mostly stay open. Riad breakfasts continue normally.
  • Transport: Buses and trains run normal schedules. Private transfers run 24/7 as always. Drivers may be fasting — be considerate about long shifts without a food break.
  • Evenings: Come alive. Iftar (breaking the fast at sunset) is a huge communal meal — many riads organize iftar experiences. Markets stay open late.
  • Cultural tone: Dress modestly, avoid eating/drinking visibly on the street during daylight, and travel with respect. Many travelers actually prefer Ramadan — it’s less crowded and the evening atmosphere is magical.

Eid al-Fitr & Eid al-Adha 2026 — expect spikes

Eid al-Fitr: April 15–17, 2026. Marks the end of Ramadan. Huge family holiday — people travel to see relatives. Transfer demand to/from airports and between cities spikes. Availability tightens. Book as early as possible if your trip overlaps.

Eid al-Adha: June 6–8, 2026. The "Festival of Sacrifice" — the biggest holiday of the Muslim year. Many businesses close for 2–3 days. Traditional livestock markets appear in every city in the week before. Tourist infrastructure largely keeps running but pace slows and some shops stay shut. We run transfers throughout Eid but book early.

Where to go when — by region

Marrakech

Sweet spots: March–May and October–November. Avoid July–August unless you plan to pool-lounge at a riad all day and explore only after sunset.

Essaouira & Atlantic coast

April–September. Constant 20–25°C, strong Atlantic breeze (cooling in summer, requires a jacket in April/October). Kitesurfing peak: June–August. Cheap flights land at Essaouira Mogador Airport (ESU) from Paris Orly.

Sahara (Merzouga / Zagora)

March–May and September–November. Summer is genuinely dangerous (42°C+ daily, cold nights still). Winter nights in the camps can drop below freezing — bring serious layers if you go December–February.

Atlas mountains (Imlil, Toubkal)

Trekking season: May–October. Imlil village itself is accessible year-round for a day trip and our drivers run the 1h30 transfer from Marrakech daily (69€ for 1–4 passengers). Toubkal summit attempts without winter gear: June–October only.

Agadir / Taghazout

Year-round mild. Surf season: October–March (bigger Atlantic swells). Beach season: May–September. December–February nights cool but daytime still 18–20°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the absolute best month to visit Marrakech?

April and October. Temperatures sit in the 22–28°C range during the day, nights are cool (12–15°C), the desert is accessible, and the medina is pleasant without the July–August crushing heat. Prices are still shoulder-season level.

Is it worth visiting Morocco during Ramadan?

Yes, with expectations set. Ramadan 2026 runs from March 17 to April 15. Many restaurants close during daylight, city rhythm is slower, and evenings come alive after sunset (iftar). Hotels and riads stay open, tourist sites operate normal hours. It's quieter and cheaper but some logistics are different.

When is the Essaouira wind season for kitesurfing and windsurfing?

April to September, peaking June–August when the trade winds blow 20–30 knots almost daily. See our Essaouira kitesurfing guide for the detailed month-by-month breakdown.

Can I visit Imlil and the Atlas mountains in winter?

Partially. The village of Imlil (1,740m) is accessible year-round and our drivers do the transfer daily. But the mountain trails — Toubkal, the refuges — are closed or require full winter mountaineering equipment from December through March. If you want summit views in the snow, aim for May–October.

When do transfer prices change seasonally?

Our headline prices are fixed year-round. We don't run surge pricing or seasonal markups — Marrakech to Essaouira is 85€ in January or August. Availability, however, tightens significantly around Easter, Christmas, New Year, and Eid al-Fitr (April 15–17, 2026). Book earlier in those windows.

Is Morocco too hot to visit in July or August?

Marrakech and the interior: yes, honestly — 40–45°C daily, uncomfortable for sightseeing between 11 am and 5 pm. Essaouira and the coast: perfect (22–26°C, constant breeze). Summer is when Moroccans themselves flee to Essaouira, Agadir, and Tangier. If you come in summer, base yourself on the coast and day-trip inland.

When does the Sahara get too hot or too cold?

Too hot: June–August, daytime 45°C+ in Merzouga and Zagora. Too cold (nights): December–January, camp nights can hit -5°C. Best months for the desert: March–May and September–November.

What are the 2026 Moroccan public holidays that affect travel?

Eid al-Fitr: April 15–17, 2026 (end of Ramadan — major family holiday, transport demand spikes). Eid al-Adha: June 6–8, 2026 (biggest religious holiday — many businesses close 2–3 days). Throne Day: July 30. Green March Day: November 6. Independence Day: November 18. New Year (Gregorian): January 1. Private transfers run on all these days but availability tightens and early booking is essential.
