Arriving at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) — 2026 First-Timer Checklist
Your first arrival in Marrakech can feel chaotic — night flights, long passport queues, persistent taxi touts. This is the checklist we wish every customer had before landing. Follow it in order and you’ll be at your riad within 60–90 minutes of wheels down.
The 60-second version
- • RAK airport is 6 km from the medina, 5 km from Gueliz, 12 km from Palmeraie
- • Passport control takes 30–60 min at peak (10 pm–2 am)
- • Buy a SIM at arrivals (Maroc Telecom, Orange, or Inwi — 100–200 MAD)
- • Private transfer from 29€ (1–4 passengers), driver waits with name sign
- • Pay on arrival OR online — no prepayment required
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) — the basics
Marrakech Menara Airport (IATA code: RAK, ICAO: GMMX) is Morocco’s second-busiest airport after Casablanca, handling roughly 6 million passengers a year. It has two terminals — T1 (international) and T2 (mostly low-cost). Both are compact: walking from the gate to the arrivals hall takes about 5 minutes.
Distances from the airport:
- • Medina / Jemaa el-Fnaa: 6 km, ~15 min by car
- • Gueliz (new town): 5 km, ~12 min
- • Hivernage: 4 km, ~10 min
- • Palmeraie: 12 km, ~25 min
- • Agafay desert camps: 30–35 km, ~50 min
- • Essaouira: 180 km, ~2h30
Step-by-step: what to do after landing
1. Fill in the white arrival card (on the plane)
Cabin crew hand out a small white entry card mid-flight. Fill it in before landing — pen ready, passport handy. Needs your Moroccan address (your riad or hotel) and a Moroccan phone number. If you don’t have one yet, leave it blank or write your booking reference.
2. Passport control (30–60 min at peak)
Follow signs to "Police / Passport Control". Join the correct queue — EU passports often have a dedicated lane. Most officers speak basic French and English. They stamp your passport; no visa needed for most nationalities for stays up to 90 days. Keep the small slip they attach — you’ll need it on departure.
3. Baggage claim
Small airport — only 2–3 carousels. Bags usually arrive 15–30 minutes after you clear passport control. Free luggage trolleys are available.
4. SIM card booth (before exiting)
Just before you exit customs, there are operator booths in the arrivals hall:
- • Maroc Telecom: best rural coverage, strongest signal on the road to Essaouira/Agadir
- • Orange: competitive data plans, good for cities
- • Inwi: often the cheapest data bundles
Expect 100–200 MAD for 10–20 GB of data valid 30 days. Bring your passport. eSIMs (Airalo, Holafly) are a fine alternative if your phone supports them — activate before you land so you have data the moment you arrive.
5. ATM (get some dirhams)
BMCE, Attijariwafa, and BMCI ATMs are in the arrivals area. Withdraw 2,000–3,000 MAD to cover tips, small shops, and any MAD-only places. You don’t need much — cards work in most restaurants, riads, and shops in Marrakech proper.
6. Meet your driver (name sign, arrivals hall)
Walk out through customs. Your driver is in the arrivals hall on the right-hand side, holding a sign with your name. If you don’t spot him within 5 minutes, send a WhatsApp — we reply in under 2 minutes 24/7. He helps with luggage and walks you to the car in the parking area (a 2-minute walk, covered).

Book on WhatsApp – 29€The questions every first-timer asks
"Do I pay in cash only?"
No. You can pay in cash on arrival (EUR or MAD), by card on arrival via a payment link we send, or online in advance. No prepayment is required. The price is fixed — it’s on this page.
"What if my flight is late?"
Flight tracking is automatic. The driver knows your actual arrival time in real time. If your flight is delayed by 30 minutes or 3 hours, the driver simply arrives later. No waiting fee charged for flight delays — this is standard, not a favor.
"Do you have a child seat?"
Available on request. Confirm at booking — at least 24 hours before pickup is ideal. We have 0–13 kg baby seats, 9–18 kg toddler seats, and 15–36 kg booster seats. No extra charge. If this matters for your trip, please mention it when you send your WhatsApp — we don’t stock them by default in every vehicle, and we want to make sure the right seat is in the right car.
"Is it safe at night?"
Yes. Most flights to RAK arrive between 10 pm and 2 am, and we run airport pickups 24/7 all year. Professional drivers, modern cars, fixed price, named driver with your booking reference. Far safer than negotiating with unmetered taxis at 1 am after a 5-hour flight.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does passport control take at Marrakech airport?
Plan for 30–60 minutes during peak hours (most flights arrive between 10 pm and 2 am). Non-EU passports can take longer if only 2–3 booths are open. Fill in the white arrival card during the flight to save time. As of 2026, the e-gate system for EU passports is operational but often manned only at peak times.
Where do I meet my private driver at RAK airport?
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall just after you exit customs, holding a sign with your name or the booking reference. At RAK the meeting point is the right-hand side of the main arrivals hall (after the duty-free zone). If you don't see your driver within 5 minutes, send a WhatsApp — we answer in under 2 minutes 24/7.
Do I pay the driver in cash or is online payment better?
Both work. You can pay on arrival in cash (EUR or MAD), by card if we've sent a payment link, or online in advance — no prepayment is required. Many travelers prefer paying on arrival because it removes the "cash only?" concern some airport taxi operators raise. The fixed price never changes: 29€ for 1–4 passengers Airport → Medina.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track every flight automatically using your flight number. If your plane is delayed by 30 minutes or 3 hours, we adjust — the driver arrives when your wheels touch down, and we never charge a waiting fee for flight delays. This is the single most common question we get, and the answer is always: don't worry, we've got it.
Can you provide a child seat?
Yes, but you must request it at booking — we don't stock them by default in every vehicle. Baby seats (0–13 kg), toddler seats (9–18 kg), and booster seats (15–36 kg) are all available. Confirm the child's weight/age on WhatsApp at least 24 hours before pickup. No extra charge.
Should I buy a SIM card at the airport or in the city?
At the airport. Three Moroccan operators — Maroc Telecom, Orange, and Inwi — have booths right after baggage claim. Expect 100–200 MAD (~10–20€) for a tourist SIM with 10–20 GB of data valid 30 days. Bring your passport. eSIM options (Airalo, Holafly) also work fine if your phone supports them — activate before landing.
Which ATM should I use at Marrakech airport?
There are BMCE, Attijariwafa, and BMCI ATMs in the arrivals area. Withdrawal limits are usually 2,000–4,000 MAD per transaction with a fee of around 30–40 MAD. Exchange counters offer worse rates than ATMs. Have both euros and some Moroccan dirhams (MAD) on you — tips, small shops, and some riads prefer MAD.
How far is RAK airport from the medina and how much is a transfer?
RAK is about 6 km from the medina (Jemaa el-Fnaa area), 5 km from Gueliz (new town), and 12 km from Palmeraie. A private transfer is 29€ to the medina and 35€ to Palmeraie (1–4 passengers, fixed price). Official airport taxis (metered or negotiated) range 100–250 MAD depending on bargaining skills.
