What to Expect on This Route
This is a mountain journey, not a motorway sprint. Leaving Marrakech, the N9 crosses the Haouz plain and then begins the long climb into the High Atlas. Berber villages cling to the slopes, walnut and almond trees fill the valleys, and roadside stalls sell mineral rocks and pots of local honey. The scenery earns every one of the four hours.
The high point — literally — is the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the highest paved road pass in the country. After the summit the landscape turns dramatic and arid as you descend toward the edge of the Sahara. A short branch off the main road brings you to Ait Ben Haddou, where the golden ksar rises above the Ounila river exactly as it has for centuries.
The road: The N9 is paved from end to end and has been widened, but it stays winding with many switchbacks over the pass. Our drivers do it week in, week out and take the curves smoothly. If you are sensitive to motion, medication and a front seat make all the difference.
Day trip or desert tour: Most guests come for the day and are back in Marrakech by evening; others use Ait Ben Haddou as the first leg toward Ouarzazate and the dunes of Zagora or Merzouga. Either way, tell us your plan and we tailor the timing around it.

Is a Private Transfer from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou Worth It?
For an unhurried, comfortable visit to the kasbah — yes, without question.
Ait Ben Haddou sits at the end of a four-hour mountain drive with no direct public transport. Buses run to Ouarzazate, 30 km further on, leaving you to arrange a taxi back to the kasbah. Shared grand taxis mean changing vehicles, negotiating fares, and no guarantee of air-conditioning on a hot pre-Sahara afternoon.
Here is why travellers choose our private transfer for this route:
- Tizi n'Tichka expertise: our drivers cross the pass constantly and read every switchback — you watch the scenery instead of gripping the door handle
- Wait-and-return day trips: we drive you out in the morning, wait while you explore for as long as you like, and bring you back the same evening — no schedules, no second taxi
- Gateway to the desert: keep the same car and driver on to Ouarzazate, Zagora or Merzouga, and we build the whole route around your dates
- Photo stops included: the Tizi n'Tichka viewpoints and the film-studio country around Ouarzazate are worth pausing for — just ask your driver to pull over
- Families and comfort: air-conditioning the whole way, room for luggage, and a child seat on request for a long day in the mountains
If you are a solo traveller on the tightest budget and don't mind piecing together buses and shared taxis via Ouarzazate, that route exists. For anyone travelling as a couple, family or group, a private transfer turns a logistical puzzle into one of the best days of the whole trip.

About 4 hours each way, covering 200 km on the N9. The road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m — the highest paved pass in Morocco — before dropping toward the edge of the desert. It is the scenery, not the distance, that makes it a full-morning drive.
Yes, and it is one of our most popular day trips. We leave early, you get several hours to explore the kasbah, and your driver waits and brings you back the same evening — around 8 to 9 hours door-to-door. Book the round trip and you save 10%. Just tell us your preferred departure time on WhatsApp.

Book on WhatsApp — 139€Absolutely. Ait Ben Haddou is the classic first leg of a Sahara tour. Many travellers carry on to Ouarzazate, then Zagora or Merzouga for the dunes over two or three days. Send us your itinerary on WhatsApp and we'll reply with a fixed multi-day quote — same vehicle and same driver the whole way.
The N9 is fully paved and was widened in recent years, but it is a genuine mountain road with many switchbacks over the pass. Our drivers cross it constantly and take the curves gently. If you are prone to car sickness, take medication before departure and sit in the front — and we are glad to stop for fresh air at the viewpoints.
Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO-listed earthen ksar that has stood since the 11th century and appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia and many more. You cross the little river, climb through the clay houses to the old granary at the top, and take in the views over the palm valley. Your driver waits at no extra charge while you explore.
