Private Transfer vs Supratours vs CTM Bus — Morocco 2026 Honest Comparison

We run a private transfer company, so you’d expect a biased answer. You won’t get one. For solo travelers on the Marrakech–Essaouira route, Supratours is often the right call. Here’s the honest breakdown of all four options — Supratours, CTM, Grand Taxi, and private transfer — with real 2026 prices and who should pick which.

Quick answer

  • Solo, budget-first: Supratours or CTM (~8–9€)
  • 2 travelers, some comfort: CTM first-class or private
  • 3+ travelers, families, luggage: Private transfer wins on math and time
  • Airport arrival, night, or flight connection: Private, every time
  • Adventure budget traveler: Grand Taxi (Sidi Mimoun stand)

The four options explained

CTM (Compagnie de Transports au Maroc) is the state-owned bus company — modern fleet, air-conditioned, good stations, book online at ctm.ma. Reliable.

Supratours is run by ONCF (the railway) — similar comfort to CTM, often newer buses, and it’s the main operator to Essaouira because there’s no train line. Website is supratours.ma (French-only in practice).

Grand Taxi is a shared 6-seat Mercedes sedan that leaves when full from a dedicated taxi stand (Sidi Mimoun in Marrakech). No schedule, no air-conditioning in most, no seatbelts in the back. Cheap and fast but uncomfortable.

Private transfer is a booked car (sedan, van, or minibus) with a named driver for your group only. Door-to-door, fixed price, flexible schedule.

Head-to-head: Marrakech → Essaouira (2026)

Option Price / person Time Door-to-door Luggage
Supratours ~9€ (90 MAD) 3h No — station to station 20 kg limit
CTM ~8€ (80 MAD) 3h15 No — station to station 20 kg limit
Grand Taxi (shared) ~15€ (150 MAD) 2h30 No — stand to stand Very limited
Private transfer (for 4) 21€ (85€ ÷ 4) 2h30 Yes — hotel to hotel 4 large cases

Prices are EUR equivalents at ~10 MAD = 1€. Bus fares last verified April 2026 on operator websites.

Comfort, flexibility, and hidden costs

The ticket price isn’t the full cost. Add: a taxi from your riad to Bab Doukkala station (20 MAD), a taxi from Essaouira bus station to your riad (20 MAD), an overweight bag fee (10–20 MAD), and the 30–40 minutes of station wait time before departure. For two travelers, that adds 60–80 MAD (~7€) — closing most of the gap between a bus and a private sedan split two ways.

Private transfers also leave when you want. No 7:30 am or 3:30 pm fixed slots. If you want to stop for argan oil, photograph the goat trees, or eat tagine in Chichaoua — you stop. Bus passengers get one scheduled toilet break and that’s it.

Traveling as a group? Private is cheaper than you think.

Decision matrix — who should pick what

Choose Supratours if…

  • • You’re traveling solo or as a couple on a strict budget
  • • Your route is Marrakech → Essaouira (Supratours has the most daily departures here)
  • • You speak basic French or have someone who does
  • • You have light luggage (under 20 kg, no surfboards or kite gear)

Choose CTM if…

  • • You’re going Marrakech → Casablanca, Fes, or Tangier (CTM dominates long-distance)
  • • You want an English booking website (ctm.ma)
  • • You prefer the cleaner Bab Doukkala station in Marrakech
  • • You’re OK with longer travel times (CTM is a notch slower than Supratours)

Choose Grand Taxi if…

  • • You speak some Arabic or French and enjoy negotiating
  • • You want the fastest land option (they drive aggressively)
  • • You have one small backpack and no fixed schedule
  • • You’re ready to be the sixth person in a car designed for four

Choose private transfer if…

  • • You’re 3 or more passengers (math tips in your favor immediately)
  • • You’re arriving at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or Essaouira Airport (ESU)
  • • You have surfboards, kite gear, baby seats, or large bags
  • • You’re traveling at night, early morning, or connecting to a flight
  • • You want to stop along the way (argan cooperatives, viewpoints, lunch)
  • • You value the zero-stress door-to-door experience

Safety notes

CTM and Supratours are both safe — modern buses, professional drivers, consistent safety record. Grand Taxis have a higher crash rate on fast intercity routes, particularly on the Marrakech–Agadir road at night. Private transfers booked with a registered operator carry full commercial insurance. Informal street taxis often don’t. If safety matters (children, elderly passengers, night travel), this is the real consideration — not price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CTM or Supratours cheaper for Marrakech to Essaouira?

Both are in the same range: CTM around 80–90 MAD (~8€) and Supratours around 90–100 MAD (~9€) per person one-way. Supratours has more daily departures on this route (4–6 per day) and is generally newer on the fleet. CTM has a better station in Marrakech (Bab Doukkala) but fewer departures to Essaouira.

How many people do I need before private transfer is cheaper than the bus?

The break-even is around 4 passengers on the Marrakech–Essaouira route. A 85€ private sedan divided by 4 people is about 21€ each — essentially the same as a Supratours ticket, with door-to-door pickup and zero station time.

Can I book CTM or Supratours online in English?

CTM has an English website (ctm.ma) and accepts foreign cards. Supratours (supratours.ma) is mostly in French and can be frustrating for non-French speakers. Both also sell tickets at station counters in cash. A private transfer is booked in English by WhatsApp or email in about two minutes.

How much luggage can I take on a CTM or Supratours bus?

The official limit is 20 kg per passenger, with extra charges for additional bags (around 10–20 MAD per bag). Surfboards, kite gear, and oversized luggage are routinely refused on intercity buses in Morocco. A private sedan takes 4 standard suitcases; a van takes 7 plus board bags.

Do Grand Taxis run Marrakech to Essaouira?

Yes, shared Grand Taxis run from the Sidi Mimoun taxi stand in Marrakech to Essaouira for around 100–150 MAD (~10–15€) per seat. The car leaves when it has six passengers (not four — Moroccan rules). Duration is similar to private (2h30) but the car is cramped, rarely air-conditioned, and the driver makes the pace.

Is there Wi-Fi on CTM or Supratours buses?

Supratours advertises Wi-Fi on some intercity routes, but it rarely works reliably. CTM does not offer Wi-Fi. Mobile data with a local SIM (Maroc Telecom, Orange, or Inwi) is far more reliable on both buses and in private cars.

Are private transfers worth it for solo travelers?

Honestly, usually not — if you're alone and on a budget, Supratours or CTM is the right call on the Marrakech–Essaouira or Marrakech–Casablanca routes. Private transfers become the better value from 2 passengers upward, and clearly win from 3+.

Can I stop along the way with CTM or Supratours?

No. Buses run station-to-station with one scheduled rest stop. Private transfers allow unlimited stops on the route — argan cooperatives, viewpoints, lunch at Chichaoua — at no extra cost. If stops matter (photography, kids, elderly passengers), private is the only option.
