Private Transfer vs Supratours vs CTM Bus — Morocco 2026 Honest Comparison

We run a private transfer company, so you’d expect a biased answer. You won’t get one. For solo travelers on the Marrakech–Essaouira route, Supratours is often the right call. Here’s the honest breakdown of all four options — Supratours, CTM, Grand Taxi, and private transfer — with real 2026 prices and who should pick which.

The four options explained

CTM (Compagnie de Transports au Maroc) is the state-owned bus company — modern fleet, air-conditioned, good stations, book online at ctm.ma. Reliable.

Supratours is run by ONCF (the railway) — similar comfort to CTM, often newer buses, and it’s the main operator to Essaouira because there’s no train line. Website is supratours.ma (French-only in practice).

Grand Taxi is a shared 6-seat Mercedes sedan that leaves when full from a dedicated taxi stand (Sidi Mimoun in Marrakech). No schedule, no air-conditioning in most, no seatbelts in the back. Cheap and fast but uncomfortable.

Private transfer is a booked car (sedan, van, or minibus) with a named driver for your group only. Door-to-door, fixed price, flexible schedule.

Comfort, flexibility, and hidden costs

The ticket price isn’t the full cost. Add: a taxi from your riad to Bab Doukkala station (20 MAD), a taxi from Essaouira bus station to your riad (20 MAD), an overweight bag fee (10–20 MAD), and the 30–40 minutes of station wait time before departure. For two travelers, that adds 60–80 MAD (~7€) — closing most of the gap between a bus and a private sedan split two ways.

Private transfers also leave when you want. No 7:30 am or 3:30 pm fixed slots. If you want to stop for argan oil, photograph the goat trees, or eat tagine in Chichaoua — you stop. Bus passengers get one scheduled toilet break and that’s it.

CTM and Supratours are both safe — modern buses, professional drivers, consistent safety record. Grand Taxis have a higher crash rate on fast intercity routes, particularly on the Marrakech–Agadir road at night. Private transfers booked with a registered operator carry full commercial insurance. Informal street taxis often don’t. If safety matters (children, elderly passengers, night travel), this is the real consideration — not price.
