Shared Shuttle vs Private Transfer in Morocco — 2026 Honest Guide
We get this question several times a week on WhatsApp: "Do you run a shared shuttle?" Short honest answer: no, not right now. Here’s the transparent breakdown of what shared options exist in Morocco, what they cost, and why for 2–4 travelers a private transfer is often the same price per head — or cheaper — once you add up the real numbers.
The honest summary
- • We don’t run a shared shuttle product today — transparent about it
- • A hypothetical shared shuttle would be ~25–30€/seat vs private at ~21€/person (4 passengers)
- • Shared options that DO exist in Morocco: Supratours, CTM, Grand Taxi, airport resort shuttles
- • Solo on a budget? Shared wins. Group of 3+? Private wins on both comfort and math.
Why we don’t currently run a shared shuttle
Several travelers a week ask us this, so let’s be direct. A shared shuttle product means:
- • A fixed schedule (say, 8 am and 4 pm daily from Marrakech to Essaouira)
- • Pickups from multiple riads — some of which are deep in the medina where cars can’t enter
- • The first passenger waiting 30–60 minutes while we collect the rest
- • A minimum threshold of bookings to run the vehicle
Running this well is operationally complex, and running it badly damages the whole brand. Our current promise is tighter: one driver, one car, one group, door-to-door, leaves when you say so. We may add a shared option once our ops team is scaled for it — we’d rather not launch a product we can’t deliver consistently.
The real per-person math (Marrakech → Essaouira)
| Option | Per person (1) | Per person (2) | Per person (4) | Door-to-door |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supratours bus | ~9€ | ~9€ | ~9€ | No |
| CTM bus | ~8€ | ~8€ | ~8€ | No |
| Grand Taxi (shared) | ~15€ | ~15€ | ~15€ | No |
| Hypothetical shared shuttle | ~25–30€ | ~25–30€ | ~25–30€ | Yes |
| Private transfer (85€) | 85€ | 43€ | ~21€ | Yes |
Private transfer price is total for the vehicle, regardless of group size (1–4 passengers). Bus fares at 1 MAD ≈ 0.10€.
The key insight: a private transfer priced for the vehicle means the more people you are, the closer to a shared shuttle it gets per head — with much better comfort. At 4 passengers you’re within 2–5€ per person of a shared shuttle, and already cheaper than a Grand Taxi seat.
Where shared shuttles do exist in Morocco
Hotel airport shuttles (Agadir, Marrakech)
Many 4- and 5-star hotels in Agadir and Taghazout run shared airport shuttles for their guests — either free (as part of the booking) or around 15–20€ per person. These are riad/hotel-run, not traveler-open. Check with your accommodation before landing.
Riad chain pickups (Marrakech medina)
Some larger riad chains (Kasbah-branded, some boutique groups) offer shared airport pickups at a discount — typically 15€ per person. Only for their own guests. Ask at booking.
Tour operator day-trip shuttles
Day trips to Essaouira, Ouzoud waterfalls, or the desert often run as shared 16-seat vans at 20–40€ per person. This is the closest thing to a traveler-accessible shared shuttle, but it’s bundled with a guided tour — not a point-to-point transfer.
Bus 19 (Marrakech airport shuttle)
The official airport bus runs RAK → Marrakech medina every 30 minutes, 30 MAD per person (~3€). Good for solo budget travelers with one backpack. Not practical with large luggage, after midnight, or with children.
Grand Taxi — the informal shared option
Grand Taxis are old Mercedes sedans (usually 240D diesel) operating out of fixed stands. They seat 6 passengers — 4 in the back, 2 in the passenger seat. They leave when full; no schedule.
Marrakech → Essaouira: ~100–150 MAD per seat from the Sidi Mimoun stand. Duration: 2h30. The driver drives fast because he’s paid per trip, not per hour.
Pros: cheapest comfortable option, fast, easy to use.
Cons: cramped (6 in a 4-seat car), rarely air-conditioned, no seatbelts in the back, luggage goes on the roof, you have to negotiate the fare if you’re the first passenger, and the driving style is not for nervous passengers.
Decision matrix — shared vs private
Choose shared (bus, Grand Taxi, hotel shuttle) if…
- • You’re a solo traveler on a strict budget
- • You have light luggage (backpack, one small suitcase)
- • Your accommodation already offers a shuttle (use it!)
- • You’re flexible on departure time
- • You’re fine arriving at a station, not at your riad door
Choose private if…
- • You’re 2 or more people (math gets competitive quickly)
- • You’re 3–4 people (private almost certainly cheapest per head)
- • You have bulky luggage, surfboards, kite gear, or baby equipment
- • You’re arriving late at night or early in the morning
- • You have a child or elderly family member
- • You want to stop along the way (argan cooperatives, lunch, photos)
- • Door-to-door matters more than per-head savings
Group of 3+? Private is the cheap option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you operate a shared shuttle between Marrakech and Essaouira?
Not currently. We're transparent about it: we run private transfers only today. For a shared-seat option on this route, Supratours and CTM buses leave 4–6 times daily from Marrakech for around 9€ per person. Door-to-door shared shuttles exist for some airport resort routes (Agadir area, 4-star hotel pickups) but aren't common for general traveler use.
Is a shared shuttle cheaper than a private transfer?
Per person, yes — if you're a solo traveler. A hypothetical 25–30€ per seat shared shuttle beats a 85€ private car you'd use alone. But once you have 3–4 people, the math flips: 85€ ÷ 4 = about 21€ per person, with door-to-door, zero waiting, and no co-passengers.
Where are shared shuttles common in Morocco?
Airport-to-resort shuttles are common in the Agadir region (especially for 4-star all-inclusive hotels — run by hotels or tour operators). Some riad chains in Marrakech offer seat-in-coach airport pickups. For intercity travel (Marrakech ↔ Essaouira, ↔ Casablanca, etc.), the "shared" equivalent is Supratours, CTM, or Grand Taxi.
What is a Grand Taxi and is it a shared shuttle?
A Grand Taxi is an old Mercedes 240D or similar sedan that leaves when it has six passengers from a dedicated taxi stand (Sidi Mimoun in Marrakech). It's the informal shared-ride system Moroccans use. Fare to Essaouira: around 100–150 MAD per seat. It's the cheapest option after buses but the cars are cramped, often without AC, and the driving can be aggressive.
Can I share a private transfer with other travelers to split the cost?
Yes — if you organize it. If you have friends or family on the same flight or staying at the same riad, one booking covers the group and the price per head drops. We won't match you with strangers (that would be a shared shuttle product, and we don't operate one). Many hostels run informal "who's going to Essaouira tomorrow?" boards — that's how travelers coordinate.
Why don't you run a shared shuttle service?
Honest answer: quality control is much harder. A shared shuttle means fixed schedules, pickup routes through multiple riads in narrow medina streets, and the first passenger waiting for the last passenger to be ready. Our model — private, door-to-door, flexible schedule — is a cleaner promise to deliver. We may add shared options in the future if demand justifies it.
What's the airport shuttle situation at Marrakech Menara (RAK)?
Bus 19 runs from RAK to the medina for 30 MAD per person, about every 30 minutes, from 6 am to midnight. It's the classic low-budget shared option. Private transfer from RAK to medina is 29€ (1–4 passengers, fixed, door-to-door). For 2+ passengers with luggage arriving at 1 am, private almost always wins on time and stress.
Are shared shuttles safe in Morocco?
The formal ones (hotel shuttles, CTM, Supratours) are safe and well-run. Informal shared options (Grand Taxi) have a higher road-accident rate, especially at night on intercity routes. Private transfers with a registered operator — full commercial insurance, named driver, flight tracking — are the safest option, full stop.
Transparent, private, door-to-door.
